Cement particle boards combine the best properties of cement and wood. Approximate proportions in which these ingredients are found: 50% - 60% wood - for example, softwood shavings, 20% -25% Portland cement and 10% - 30% other environmental additives. The structure of the boards is layered. The outer layer consists of a smaller fraction of chips, and the layers in the middle of the board are made of a larger fraction.
The production of cement particle boards involves pressing layers at high temperatures. Thanks to this, the board acquires the appropriate hardness and smooth surface. The sheets are then cut to the required sizes.
Application of DSP
Cement particle boards are widely used in construction due to their versatile properties.
- They are suitable for system solutions such as floors (also on beams), ceilings and walls.
- They can be used in internal and external partitions under plaster, for ventilated facades or three-layer walls.
- In frame construction, DSP strengthens and stabilizes the structure, acting as a facing material.
- They are suitable for the construction of various buildings, including temporary structures, and are used in wet areas and fire-resistant structures due to their high resistance to weather conditions.
Main properties of cement bonded particle boards
Frost resistance
Cement particle boards are resistant to low temperatures. EMPA (Federal Institute for Materials Research and Technology in Switzerland) conducted a study in which
cement particle boardwas subjected to one hundred and fifty cycles of temperature changes from -20˚C to +20˚C with different moisture contents. Tests did not reveal any changes in the boards and
CBFwere classified as definitely frost-resistant.
Moisture resistance
As you know,
wood’s worst enemy is water.
Cement particle boards do not swell when exposed to moisture. After testing by soaking the boards for 24 hours, a swelling (increase in thickness) of 1.5% was recorded. For a typical 10mm thick board this value is invisible to the naked eye.
Cement particle boards are also used in permanent formwork, into which wet concrete mixture is poured. These slabs are designed to keep the mixture in the desired form until it hardens, while maintaining its original properties.
Fire resistance
Portland cement is not as flammable as other resin fillers. Therefore, it not only provides good protection against weather conditions, but also contributes to the good fire properties of cement bonded particle boards. Fire reaction class, depending on the specific product, A2 or B (scale from A to F). This means that
it is practically non-flammable material. Thuscement particle boardis a good fire protection for the structure.
Soundproofing
Cement particle board is not suitable for use as sound insulation, but for this type of material
it has good sound insulation. With a thickness of 8 mm, sound insulation is 27.4 dB. With a thickness of 12 mm this is 30 dB. Chipboard and cement boards have good sound absorption, which effectively reduces reverberation in rooms.
Ecological and sustainable choice
Cement particle boardsdo not contain harmful substances and are resistant to animal excrement, rodents and termites. They do not contain formaldehyde. CBPBs are also resistant to chemical cleaning agents. They are also not an environment for the development of fungi and mold.
Resistance to shocks and loads
Cement particle boardsare characterized by greater bending rigidity and lower deformability (elastic deformations) - up to 80% - than conventional particle boards. They carry additional loads well, which means you can drill holes in them and hang various kinds of shelves or other decorative elements. This gives you freedom when arranging not only interiors, but also modern facades.
Additional information about properties and sizes
- The dimensional tolerance of typical cement bonded particle boards is +/- 3 mm.
- According to European standards, the density of this type of product should be more than 1000 kg/m³. For example, the boards available at this link have a density of 1350 kg/m³.
- The thickness of the boards ranges from 8 to 40 mm.
- The typical width of cement bonded particle boards is 1250 mm.
- Length, usually in several dimensions, from 2600 to 3200 mm.
Cement particle boards are suitable for processing with wooden tools. They are easy to combine, for example, with drywall. Installation can be done using either pneumatic or manual nails. However, they must be resistant to corrosion.
Cement particle boards are a good, durable and environmentally friendly choice. They will withstand weather conditions and extreme loads, even if the outside is not finished with another material.
