How to prepare a wooden house for winter?

How to prepare a wooden house for winter?
As winter approaches, it’s time to ensure proper protection of wooden houses and cottages. Thanks to this, they will retain their beauty and functionality for a long time. Winter is a difficult and demanding time for wooden structures. Without proper protection, they are exposed to the destructive effects of frost, low temperatures and moisture. Our short guide will tell you how to properly protect a wooden house from weather conditions. You will also learn what mistakes should be avoided in order not to expose the house to destruction.

Why is it so important to protect a wooden house?

Wood is an exceptionally durable raw material, but without proper care and constant monitoring, winter can be disastrous for it. What dangers await wooden houses in winter?
  • In winter, your home is especially susceptible to the damaging effects of frost, moisture and temperature changes. They can significantly weaken its structure and lead to cracks, delamination or deformation of the wood.
  • Winter also brings the risk of water in your pipes freezing. This can damage them.
  • Heavy snowfall can be dangerous not only for the wooden structure of the house, but also for the roofing itself.
  • Winter weather also means strong winds, which can damage improperly secured doors and windows.
It is impossible to predict what weather conditions winter will bring, especially since in recent years in Ukraine it has been extremely capricious and changeable. However, you can influence how to protect your home from its destructive effects. Start with a thorough technical inspection of the property. Focus on the facade and check for any defects, cracks or other even minor damage. If you notice any, remove them immediately, and then apply impregnation or other protective measures. Also make sure the gutter is tight, clean, dry and empty. Also check the chimney and ventilation ducts for air flow.

Moisture is the main enemy of wood

In winter, air humidity increases. This is a natural phenomenon that poses a serious threat to a wooden house. Excess moisture can cause fungus or mold to appear on wooden elements. They can weaken the structure of the house. Due to excessive moisture, wood can also begin to rot. Moreover, mold and mildew are dangerous to health and can cause a number of serious diseases. Moisture can also damage furniture and all things stored in the house. To avoid these unpleasant consequences, the wood should be impregnated.

Impregnation is the first step to protecting a wooden house

What is wood impregnation and how to do it correctly? Wood impregnation is a treatment that protects a house from moisture, but not only that. The right product can also protect the building structure from precipitation and pests. The whole process includes the introduction of chemicals into the wood to create a protective layer. Impregnation of wood also affects the durability of this material, which means it increases the resistance of the entire structure to harmful factors. What is the best way to perform this procedure? At your disposal wood impregnations: chemicals containing synthetic resins, oils, varnishes and fungicides. The most popular impregnation method involves manual, precise and gentle painting of wooden surfaces. Most often, colorless oils and colored varnishes are applied in this way. They protect the wood for 1-3 years. The selected drug can also be applied using pressure. This method gives much longer-lasting results that last up to several decades. Do not forget to carry out the treatment with protective gloves and in accordance with the instructions on the packaging of the selected product.

Doors and windows - what condition should they be in before winter?

To properly prepare a house for winter, impregnation alone is not enough. It is equally important to monitor the condition and safety of windows and doors.
  • Begin this activity by thoroughly cleaning the windows. This will also allow you to assess the condition of the seals and fittings.
  • If your house has wooden windows, do not forget to protect their profiles with wood polish. This preparation will refresh the wood and at the same time remove microcracks. This way you will protect your home from frost and then from moisture. It is worth lubricating the fittings with technical petroleum jelly once a year.
  • Also thoroughly clean the door of your house from dust and dirt - after all, it is an excellent breeding ground for harmful microorganisms. Check their tightness - if there are problems, adjust the hinges. Protect their surface from moisture using impregnation.
  • You can also additionally insulate the door with an additional layer of insulation. It is also worth installing an anti-burglary mechanism. Abandoned garden houses are a tempting target for thieves.
  • Before leaving the house, carefully close the doors and windows. This will protect them from the wind.

Don't forget to inspect the roof!

The next step in properly preparing your home before winter is to inspect the roof. If it is not airtight, moisture can enter the house through it. Also check the slope of the roof - it is important that it is easier for melting snow to drain from its surface. If you hear in the weather forecast about heavy snowfall, be sure to come to your dacha and remove the snow or entrust this to a special company that provides such services.

What mistakes should be avoided to avoid damaging a wooden house?

If you want to prepare your home for winter so that it brings the expected results, avoid the most common mistakes:
  • inappropriate and careless impregnation;
  • leave the house unattended and unattended throughout the winter;
  • neglecting the roof, leaving snow on it;
  • improper fastening of doors and windows - not closing them carefully;
  • it is too late to start preparations - they should begin before the first frost;
  • leave the electrical installation turned on - in your absence in the house it should be completely turned off;
  • using chemicals that are too strong - they can damage the structure of the wood and thus have the opposite effect than intended.

Also, do not forget to properly store and care for your garden furniture!

If you also have wooden garden furniture in your home's garden space, be sure to protect it. Do you have a pantry or garage ? You can store them there. Vacuum them thoroughly first and then wet clean using a soft cloth and a mild detergent. Before moving them to a cool but dry area or placing them in patio furniture covers, make sure they are completely dry. Wet furniture can become dull. They can also develop mold. Also check their condition and repair any defects. Remove patio furniture from the area that cannot be repaired.

Summary

Despite the fact that wood is an extremely durable raw material, it requires special protection from winter. Adequate protection of its individual elements and the entire structure is critical to the durability and aesthetics of the house. A thorough inspection of the entire facility, regular maintenance and proper protection from moisture, low temperatures and frost are the most important steps to take in this direction. Do not forget to come to your home from time to time during the winter to check its condition and clear the roof of snow. Then also turn on the heating to ensure proper circulation inside the house and better protect the building from moisture. In this way, you will extend the life of the house, and most importantly, prevent its possible damage and enjoy its beauty for many years.
