Wood is a timeless material, it fits perfectly into both the atmosphere of a rustic garden and a modern minimalist garden. A wooden fence is a wonderful combination of aesthetics and functionality, and with proper care and careful execution it will serve us for many years.
In this post we will try to introduce the topic of wooden fences. Let's talk about the possibilities of using wood for fences, which species should be avoided and which ones to choose. How to care for and maintain a wooden fence. We invite you to find out.
A wooden fence can take various forms: from classic designs using wooden spans and posts to boards to modern wooden fences combining wood with metal, stone or concrete.
What types of wood to choose for a wooden fence?
In our country, coniferous wood is most often used for the construction of wooden fences. Pine, spruce and larch are excellent materials for the construction of wooden fences. Appropriate impregnation will protect the wood for many years.
Let's avoid soft hardwoods: linden, birch or poplar.
Solid hardwood is ideal for a wooden fence. The high price of picket fences or transoms is often an obstacle.
Traditional fencing - installing fence posts/posts.
Traditional type fences are most often fences made of wooden posts with a cross-section of 6.5x6.5 cm or thicker than 9x9 cm in case of heavier spans or large distances between posts.
- Fence posts are most often placed on a concrete, brick base or on a monolithic concrete foundation. Metal anchors are used to attach racks to a plinth or foundation. Anchors can be attached to a plinth or foundation using fasteners, or they can also be filled with concrete. Don't forget to leave a small compensation gap between the bottom of the wooden post and the ground. To which it is attached, this will prevent water from pulling the wood out of the ground and will significantly extend its durability.
- Another way to install posts is with anchors driven into the ground, but due to the low resistance of the anchor to tearing or pulling out, this is a good way to build internal partitions, fences for vegetable gardens or running tracks for our pets.
- Another load-bearing element of the fence are bolts. These are horizontal elements made of square timber beams with a cross-section adapted to the weight of the span or its length - the most commonly used are 45x75 mm, 45x95 mm or thicker if necessary.
- Wooden pickets are attached to the transoms; nails, screws with anti-corrosion coating or, in some cases, stainless steel screws are used for assembly. Depending on how dense the fence should be, the pickets are installed at a distance from a few mm to several cm. The pickets from which the fence is built must be made of high-quality wood, we recommend pickets with a rounded top, 20 mm thick and 90 mm wide. The height of the fence is a matter of your own preferences and needs. Warehouses usually stock picket fences with a height of 100 cm to 180 cm.
