How to combine different types of flooring?

How to combine different types of flooring?
In one room you can successfully combine different types of flooring, creating unique combinations and stylish compositions. Functionality is also important and is often the motivation for experimenting with the way you finish your floor. Wooden boards, parquet, panels - find out how to use them in your compositions!

If you want to have different floor finishes in different rooms

Most often this happens in a living room with a kitchenette or in a kitchen with a clearly defined dining area. However, these are not the only examples of situations where someone wants to experiment with surface finishes and combine wood floors with ceramic tiles, parquet with planks, or play with colors and patterns. Such treatments also work well in large rooms where there are no partitions and the only way to separate zones is to properly design the floor.

Combination of different colors and floor patterns

Nobody said that there should be only one type of floor in one interior. The combination of colors and patterns allows you to create original decor and bring an interesting atmosphere to the room. Of course, this must be done carefully, because mixing colors too boldly can easily create the impression of chaos, excess and overload. Interesting solutions include:
  • contrasting color combinations – by combining light floorboards with dark ones, you can clearly separate zones in one interior, for example, in a living room with a kitchenette, a bedroom with a dressing room or in a hall leading to rooms. However, this solution is only suitable for large areas, since it visually reduces the space
  • smooth color transitions - combining similar shades is a safe procedure, especially recommended for small rooms;
  • a combination of different types of wooden floors - for example, boards with herringbone parquet. This is quite a rare occurrence, since investors and designers usually focus on a consistent method of surface finishing, considering the mentioned solutions as alternatives. However, in spacious, open interiors, you can try a solution in which herringbone parquet is organically combined with panels or boards.

Combination of various finishing materials

If wooden floors are used in a living room with a kitchenette, there is often a desire to combine them with ceramic tiles - the tiles are moisture-resistant and easy to clean, so they are used in the kitchen. On the other hand, it is difficult to imagine a living room completely decorated with tiles - this is an unattractive solution, hence the need to create a stylish composition from these different materials. Stone floors combined with wooden floorboards are also common. This means that not only the visual aspects need to be carefully thought through, but also the important technical aspects that will make the whole thing durable, sustainable and functional must be taken into account.

The procedure for laying floors and technical aspects

If you want to use different types of flooring in one room, pay attention to:
  • resilience – the same strength grade ensures they will wear at the same rate, so you can avoid a situation where your wood floor still looks like new but the tiles have to be replaced
  • Proper preparation of the surface before installation - the most important thing is its leveling. Finishing materials may have different heights, so be sure to adapt the screed to them or use a self-leveling screed.
