How to finish and protect OSB board?

How to finish and protect OSB board?
OSB is a durable and relatively inexpensive material often used in many industries. However, it requires appropriate protection, especially if exposed to external factors. We advise you on how to properly paint a wall, floor and roof made of OSB boards.

Types of OSB boards

OSB (oriented strand boards) is a wood material that, in addition to compressed chips, also contains resins (UV and PMUF) or PMDI glue. OSB boards are used, in particular, for the manufacture of: partitions, floors, facades, door panels, exhibition stands, furniture and small elements of interior decoration. There are several types of boards:
  • OSB 1 – Characterized by low resistance to moisture. It is intended for indoor use only. UV (urea-formaldehyde) resins are added to first-class OSB boards.
  • OSB 2 – A board whose properties and uses are similar to OSB 1. Due to its low resistance to moisture, its use is not recommended. to the facade. However, it is perfect as an element of an attic or partition.
  • OSB 3 – a board whose binder is PMUF (melamine-urethane) resin and PMDI (polyurethane) glue. Most often chosen by buyers due to their high strength and moisture resistance. It can be used both indoors and outdoors. Among OSB 3 slabs, tongue-and-groove slabs are also distinguished, which, thanks to a special joining method, are characterized by a perfectly flat surface. They are readily used for the construction of partitions, ceilings and floors.
  • OSB Firestop – OSB 3 board coated with a special fire-resistant coating that prevents the spread of fire. Used wherever the highest class of fire resistance is required.
  • OSB 4 – Like OSB 3, it can be used even in conditions of high humidity. It is durable and resistant to damage. Thanks to this, it is readily used, including for the construction of roofs and garden furniture.

Painting and protection of OSB boards.

Walls, furniture and floors made of OSB boards require additional protection (especially if they are located outside the building). Proper preparation will protect the surface from weather conditions such as water, snow or UV radiation, as well as the formation of mold and mildew. Paints, impregnations and varnishes for OSB boards also perform a decorative function, keeping the surface in excellent condition for many years. The paint should be applied twice, with the first layer being thin and the second thicker. Thanks to this, the paint coating applied to the OSB will be more durable and adhere better. However, before painting OSB boards, it is extremely important to properly prepare their surface.

OSB floor board

How to paint OSB board on the floor? Before starting work, seal all cracks, for example, with wood and wood surface putty, and then sand and thoroughly clean the surface of dust, dust and other contaminants. The base should be protected with wood surface impregnation. After drying, you can begin decorative painting. Paint for OSB floors must be very durable and resistant to mechanical damage. Apply it with a roller or brush. It is worth repeating the painting process twice, maintaining an appropriate time interval between the first and second layers.

OSB board for wall

Before you start painting, clean the wall of dust and dirt, for example, with a damp cloth and wait until it is completely dry. Don't forget to secure windows, radiators, ceilings and other elements such as light switches. All gaps should be filled and sanded with sandpaper. Remove dust formed during sanding and degrease the surface. To prime OSB boards on the wall, choose a preparation for wooden and chipboard surfaces. After drying, you can start painting. Remember to choose the right paint and the right painting technique (from top to bottom).

OSB roof slab

Before starting work, make sure that the weather conditions are suitable for painting: air humidity should not exceed 80%, and the ambient and substrate temperatures should not be lower than 10 ° C and higher than 25 ° C. The painted surface must be cleaned of dust, dirt and organic deposits. All defects should be smoothed out, and the surface should be sanded and degreased. OSB boards located outside the building require the use of an appropriate primer and paint designed for external surfaces - resistant to moisture and dirt. Use a paint roller for painting, and a brush for hard-to-reach areas. Start working from the edges, spreading the paint from top to bottom.

What preparations should be used for OSB boards?

  • Chemical-curing paints that act similarly to resin are ideal for painting OSB boards.
  • If you want to change the color OSB boards, choose acrylic enamel that is wash and scratch resistant and has good adhesion to the base.
  • When using emulsion paint for walls, it is worth protecting the OSB board with a layer of oil paint or drying oil that has impregnating properties.
  • If you want to protect only the base from damage and external factors, choose a clear varnish for wood and wood products. The product will create a waterproof coating that is resistant to dirt and some detergents.
  • There are also 3-in-1 products available in the market that act as a sealant and decorative paint. They protect wood and wood-based materials from sunlight, moisture and mold, maintaining their color for many years.

Advantages and disadvantages of OSB boards?

OSB boards are characterized by high hardness and resistance to impacts and mechanical damage. Their advantage is also their decorative structure and low price. They are lightweight, but at the same time very durable. They are easy to process and easy to install (the construction of a partition from OSB boards does not require the involvement of a specialist). OSB 3 and 4 boards are also moisture resistant, so they can be used outside buildings. Fireproof boards have a high fire resistance class. With proper protection, they will last for many years. It is also worth adding that they are made from environmentally friendly and recyclable material. Do OSB boards have any disadvantages? Unfortunately, when installing heated floors, they have to be abandoned. You should also remember not to store them in places exposed to moisture. Improper storage can lead to the development of fungi or mold.
